PRESIDENTIAL POLITICS AND STATE POLITICS

Presidential Election 2012

The State of West Virginia can by and large be considered a Democratic state, at least a Democratic-Leaning state; but not for the Presidential election 2012 with President Obama running for a second term as the Democratic Party candidate. We would not call it even a Purple state. For the Presidential election only, we will describe West Virginia as a Republican State and place it in the Red Column.
Senator Obama was beaten soundly in the 2008 Presidential election. Senator McCain won West Virginia  easily by receiving 55.60% of the vote to Senator Obama's 42.51%.
West Virginia is allotted 5 electoral votes in the Electoral College. There are 538 members of the Electoral College and a candidate needs 270 votes to win the Presidency.

POLITICAL NEWS THAT MAKES A DIFFERENCE

West Virginia U.S. Senate Race

[Updated: September 5, 2012. June 05, 2012]
Incumbent Democratic U.S. Senator Joe Manchin is running for a full term and has a substantial lead over Republican nominee John Raese. This would be the fourth time Mr. Raese has been the Republican nominee for U.S. Senate.

West Virginia Governor's Race

[June 05, 2012]
Incumbent Democratic Governor Earl Ray Tombin is running for a full four year term and will be challenged by Republican nominee Bill Maloney.

When Democrat Robert Byrd from the State of West Virginia, the longest-serving U.S. Senator (1959 to 2010) and the longest-serving member  in the history of the Unites States Congress died on June 28, 2010 a series of events occurred concerning his Senate Seat and also the Governors office.
At the time of Byrd'
s  death, Joe Manchin was the Governor of West Virginia and he made a temporary appointment of Carte Goodwin to the vacant seat. A special election for the seat was held along with the 2010 mid-term elections in which Gov. Manchin ran and won the Senate seat for the unfinished term of Senator Byrd that ends in 2012. Accordingly, Manchin is now an incumbent Democratic senator from West Virginia. He has announced that he will be running for re-election to a first full term.

When Gov. Manchin resigned to become the U.S. Senator, the office of the West Virginia Governor became vacant. State Senate President Earl Ray Tomblin who was first in line of succession became the Acting Governor in 2010.
A special election was held on October 4, 2011 to fill the unexpired term of former Gov. Manchin that will end in 2012. Acting Gov. Tomblin ran and won in that special election and is now the Incumbent Democratic Governor of the State of West Virginia. Tomblin has said that he will seek re-election in 2012.
On the Republican front, Bill Maloney who lost to Gov. Tomblin in the 2011 special election may run again in 2012.
