Presidential election 2012

The number of electoral votes in the Electoral College is set at 538 and the State of Washington is allotted 12 electoral votes. Washington is also a winner-takes-all state and the winning candidate in the state will receive all 12 electoral votes. The number of electoral votes needed to win the Presidency is 270.

In the Presidential election 2008 Senator Obama won in the State of Washington . He received 57.65% of the vote to Senator McCain's 42.31%.

State of Washington gained one additional congressional seat on account of the 2010 United States census.

The final redistricting plan was signed in to law in February 2012.

Baumgartner Will Challange Senator Cantwell  in November

Washington State Senator Michael Baumgartner will be the Republican Party nominee to run against incumbent Democratic United States Senator Maria Cantwell in the November 2012 general election.

In the open primary last Tuesday, Ms. Cantwell received 56% of the vote and Mr. Baumgartner came second with 30% of the vote.

In an open primary, candidates of all parties compete in a single election. The top two finishers will face each other in the general election in November 2012.
Incumbent Democratic U.S. senator Maria Cantwell is running for re-election for a third term.
