NEWS IN BRIEF

U.S. Congressional Politics in Kansas.

By: presidential-politics.com
August 22, 2012

All four congressional districts in Kansas in the current 112th Congress are represented by Republicans. It appears to be unlikely that it would change in January after the November 2012 general election.

Democrats are not even fielding candidates in the 1st and 3rd congressional districts.

Republican Congresswoman Lynn Jenkins was first elected to the 2nd Congressional District in 2008 and was reelected in 2010 with a huge majority - almost a third of the electorate. She remains popular and the odds that Mr. Tobias Schlingensiepen could defeat her in November are slim indeed.

The 4th Congressional District has continuously been held by Republicans since 1995. U.S. Rep. Mike Pompeo was elected in 2010 with 59 percent of the vote. It would not be easy for the Democratic candidate Robert Tillman to unseat him.

Important New Voting Requirements In Kansas

[2011-11-17]
Kansas is one of several states that has enacted new legislation that requires voters to show photo identification in order to vote.

The reason for the legislation, the Republicans say, is to prevent voter fraud. The Democrats say it is to suppress votes, especially those of the poor, the very elderly and the minorities. These groups tend to vote Democratic.

An outside observer would find it difficult to understand the reasoning for this legislation. If the Republicans suspect that voter fraud occurred in 2008 and 2010 elections, how is it that they did so well? They occupy the Governor's mansion. Both U.S. Senators from Kansas are Republicans. All four United States Representatives are Republicans. They control the state senate by a majority of 32 to 8 and the state house by a margin of 125 to 33. In the last Presidential election in 2008 the Republican candidate Senator John McCain won easily against Senator Obama (56.50% to 41.17%). So, one might wonder what voter fraud are they talking about and what more they want?

What ever the reasons are, it is a fact that new laws are now in effect. The vast majority of the population in Kansas, Democrats and Republicans alike, will be troubled if a fellow citizen is prevented from casting a vote due to lack of a photo identification.
There is a remedy for this injustice.. The workers of both parties and independent organizations of every type should recognize what has happened and set aside some time on a daily or weekly basis to assist those citizens that need help in getting a photo identification. The photo I.D. is issued free of charge.
This new legislation should not be permitted to deny a citizen's right to vote. Not so long ago, American blood was shed for the right to vote.
