PRESIDENTIAL POLITICS AND STATE POLITICS

Presidential election 2012

Iowa is allotted 6 electoral votes out of the total 538 in the Electoral College.
Iowa being a winner-takes-all state, the winning candidate will receive all of it's 6 electoral votes. But it is not the electoral votes that makes Iowa important. The Iowa Caucuses is the first major electoral event of the nominating process and receives a whole lot of media attention during the presidential election years. It is believed that Iowa Caucuses gives an early indication as to which candidate will win his or her party's nomination. The saying is that "the way Iowa goes, so goes the nomination".

In the 2008 Presidential Election, Senator Obama won the Iowa State by receiving 53.93% of the vote to Senator McCain's 44.39%.

September 25, 2012

Latest presidential poll by ARG dated September 24, 2012 gives President Obama a seven point lead over Gov. Romney  in the State of Iowa, Obama 51% Romney 44%.

However, with 44 days to go for the general election, it is far too early for the President's campaign to be confident. The ad war is just beginning and Gov. Romney's camp has plenty of money.

Illegal Immigration Is A Hot Issue In Iowa [11-26-2011]
With Iowa caucuses set for January 3, 2012 the statements by Presidential candidate Newt Gingrich on ways to solve the problem of eleven million illegal immigrants has the potential to become a major issue in Iowa.
Whether it will help Mr. Gingrich or becomes a set back is still to be seen.

The words causing the storm are " If you have been here 25 years, and you got three kids and two grand kids, you have been paying taxes and obeying the law, you belong to
a local church, I do not think we are going to separate you from your family, uproot you forcefully and kick you out." He added that Americans have to be humane in dealing with this problem. He made these statements last Tuesday at CNN Presidential debate, at which time he was leading in polls in Iowa.

Following are comments on the issue by a few influential Iowans:
Representative Steve King of Iowa, a leader in the fight against illegal immigration, said he was puzzled that Mr. Gingrich has injected  such a red-hot issue in to his campaign and added that it set off a viral discussion  among activists.

A top aide to Gov. Tery E. Branstad  of Iowa  Mr. Tim Albrecht said  "Iowa caucus goers want a solution that does not include amnesty, and if they can paint Newt with an amnesty brush, it will be toxic for his campaign."

Mark Lundberg, chairman of the Republican party of Sioux County said "Some of the candidates will treat it like it is amnesty-type issue, which is a buzzword  - a very negative word to a lot of conservatives."

A co-chairman of the Gingrich campaign in Iowa, Dr. Greg Ganske, a former congressman said The fact he spoke honestly about this and was not willing to pander or just fire a stock answer, I think a lot of people in Iowa will see that as s positive".
