Presidential Election In The State Of California, 2012

The State of California is the crown jewel in electoral politics. California is allotted 55 electoral votes in the Electoral College and California is a winner-takes-all state. The winner will receive the largest number of electoral votes (55) that a candidate could receive from any one state.

In Presidential Election 2012 President Obama won in the State of California.

DIANNE FEINSTEIN, Democrat was reelected.

Dianne Feinstein [D] 61.6%
Elizabeth Emken [R] 38.4%

U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein was the  incumbent Democratic senior U.S. Senator from California. She has served in the U.S. Senate since 1992. She also served as the Mayor of San Fransisco from 1978 to 1988.

Elizabeth Emken was the former Vice President for Govt. Relations at Autism Speaks.

U.S. House Of Representatives Election In The State Of California, 2012

The new congressional districts based on the 2010 census and drawn by the California Citizens Redistricting Commission were approved on August 15, 2011.

There was a challange to the congressional maps certified by the C.R.C. The California Supreme Court in a unanimous decision in October 2011 denied the petition challenging the maps. Finally a legal challange to the congressional maps was dismissed in Federal Court in February 2012.

The California primary was held on June 5, 2012 under the recently adopted Top Two Candidates Open primary Act. Under this act all candidates compete in one primary. The two who receive the most votes will move on to the general election regardless of their party affiliation.

In the 2012 general election held on November 6, 2012, the following were elected to represent the state of California in the United States House of Representatives:

DISTRICT 1

DOUG LaMALFA, Republican was elected.

Doug LaMalfa [R] 58.1%
Jim Reed [D]        41.9%
 
Mr. LaMalfa was a former State Senator.
Mr. Reed was an attorney.

DISTRICT 2

JARED HUFFMAN, Democrat was elected.

Jared Huffman [D]  70.4%
Daniel Roberts [R]  29.6%

Mr. Huffman was a state assembly member.
Mr. Roberts was an investment company president.

DISTRICT 3

JOHN GARMENDI, Democrat was reelected.

John Garmendi [D] 53.9%
Kim Vann [R]        46.1%

U.S. Rep. Garmendi who represented the former 10th district since 2009  sought re-election in  district 3 of the new map.

Mr. Van was a county supervisor.

DISTRICT 4

TOM McCLINTOCK, Republican was reelected.

Tom McClintock [R] 61.2%
Jack Uppal [D]         38.8%

U.S. Rep. McClintock who has represented former 4th district since 2009 sought seek re-election in  district 4 of the new map.

Mr. Uppal was an engineer.

DISTRICT 5

MIKE THOMPSON, Democrat was reelected.

Mike Thompson [D] 74.2%
Randy Loftin [R]      25.8%

U.S. Rep. Mike Thompson who has represented former 1st district since 1999 sought  re-election in district 5 of the new map.

Mr. Loftin was a tax and financial planning advisor.

DISTRICT 6

DORIS MATSUI, Democrat was reelected.

Doris Matsui [D]           74.6%
Joseph McCray Sr. [R]  25.4%

U.S. Rep. Matsui who has represented  former 5th district since 2005  sought re-election in district 6 of the new map.

DISTRICT 7

AMI BERA, Democrat was elected.

Ami Bera [D]       50.8%
Dan Lungren [R]  49.2%

U.S. Rep. Lungren who lost was the incumbent and   had represented former 7th district since 2005. He sought re-election in district 7 of the new map.. He had also previously served from 1979 to 1989.

Ms. Bera was a physician and was the Democratic candidate against Mr. Lungren in 2010.

DISTRICT 8

PAUL COOK, Republican was elected

Paul Cook [R]    57.6%
Gregg Imus [R]  42.4%

This was a battle between two Republicans.

Two Republican candidates got the most votes in the primary and under the Top Two Candidates Open primary Act  faced off in November.

Mr. Paul Cook was a state assemblyman.

Mr. Greg Imus was a minuteman Civil Defense Corps. co-founder.

DISTRICT 9

JERRY McNERNEY, Democrat was reelected.

Jerry McNerney [D] 54.7%
Ricky Gill [R]          45.3%

U.S. Rep Jerry McNerney was the incumbent. He  had represented  former 11th District since 2007 and ran  for re-election in District 9 of the new map.

Mr. Ricky Gill was a student at the UC Berkeley School of Law.

DISTRICT 10

JEFF DENHAM, Republican was reelected.

Jeff Denham [R]       53.5%
Jose Hernandez [D]  46.5%

U.S. Rep. Jeff Denham was the incumbent. He had represented  former 19th District since 2011 and sought  re-election in District 10 of the new map.

Mr. Hernandez was an astronaut.

DISTRICT 11

GEORGE MILLER, Democrat was reelected.

George Miller [D] 69.1%
Virginia Fuller [R] 30.9%

U.S. Rep. Miller was the incumbent. He had represented  former 7th District since 1975 and sought re-election in  District 11 of the new map.

DISTRICT 12

NANCY PELOSI, Democrat was reelected.

John Dennis [R]   15.1%

U.S. Rep. Pelosi was the incumbent and  the Minority Leader of the House. She has represented former District 8 since 1993 and sought re-election in  District 12 of the new map.

BARBARA LEE, Democrat was reelected.

U.S. Rep. Lee was the incumbent. She had represented  former 9th District since 1998 and sought re-election in District 13 of the new map.

DISTRICT 14

JACKIE SPEIER, Democrat was reelected.

Deborah Bacigalupi [R]   25.8%

U.S. Rep. Speier who had represented  former 12th District since 2008 ran for  re-election in District 14 of the new map.

DISTRICT 15

ERIC SWALWELL, Democrat was elected.

Fortney Pete Stark [D]  47.8%
       
Two Democrats ran against each other in this district.

U.S. Rep. Stark who lost had represented the former 13th District since 1993. He ran for   reelection in District 15 of the new map.

Mr. Swalwell was an Almeda County deputy district attorney and member of the Dublin city council.

JIM COSTA, Democrat was elected.

U.S. Rep. Dennis Cardoza, Democrat who had represented former District 18 since 2003 retired. 

U.S. Rep Jim Costa who had represented  former 20th District since 2005 ran for re-election in  District 16 of the new map.

Mr. Whelan was an attorney.

DISTRICT 17

MIKE HONDA, Democrat was reelected.

U.S. Rep. Mike Honda had represented former  15th District since 2001. He ran for  re-election in District 17 of the new map.

U.S. Rep. Anna Eshoo  who had represented  former 14th District since 1993 ran for re-election in District 18 of the new map.

Mr. Chapman, as the Republican nominee unsuccessfully challanged Rep. Eshoo also  in 2010.

ZOE LOFGREN, Democrat was reelected.

U.S. Rep. Zoe Lofgren, who had represented  former 16th District since 1995 ran for  re-election in District 19 of the new map.

U.S. Rep. Sam Farr who has represented  former 17th District since 1993 ran for reelection in District 20 of the new map.

DAVID VALADAO, Republican was elected.

Mr. Valadao was a state assembly member.

Mr. Hernandez was the chief executive officer of Central California Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.

DEVIN NUNES, Republican was reelected.

U.S. Rep. Nunes who has represented former District 21 since 2003 ran for re-election in  District 22 in the new map.

Mr. Lee was a lawyer and former Sunnayvale city council member.

Mr. Maldonado was a former Lieutenant Governor of California.

HOWARD "BUCK" McKEON, Republican was re-elected.

Tony Strickland [R]  48.0%

Republican U.S. Rep.Elton Gallegly who has represented former District 24 since 2003 retired. Most of former district 24 became district 26 in the new map.

Mr. Strickland was a state senator.
Ms. Brownley was a state assembly member.

DISTRICT 27

JUDY CHU, Democrat was reelected.

Jack Orswell [R]  36.7%  

U.S. Rep. Judy Chu has represented former District 32 since 2009.  She sought  reelection in District 27 of the new map.

ADAM SCHIFF, Democrat was reelected.

U.S. Rep. Adam Schiff who has represented former District 29 since 2003 sought reelection in District 28 of the new map.

TONY CARDENAS, Democrat was elected.

Mr. Cardenas was a Los Angeles City Council member
Mr. Hernandez was the president of San Francisco Chamber of Commerce.

U.S. Rep. Sherman represented former District 28. U.S. Rep. Berman represented former District 27. They were both Democrats and ran against each other for District 30 in the new map.

GARY G. MILLER, Republican was elected.

Two Republicans contested for this District.

A substantial Democratic vote was divided among several contestants and none of them were able to come within the Top Two vote getters. General consensus is that there would have been  a close contest between a Republican and a Democratic candidate for this District.

Resident incumbent Republicans, U.S. Rep. David Dreier who has represented former 26th District since 2003 and U.S. Rep. Jerry Lewis who has represented former District 41 since 2003, both retired.

U.S. Rep. Gary G. Miller who has represented former 42nd District since 2003 sought reelection in District 31 of the new map.

Mr. Dutton was a state senator.

A poll taken on September 26, 2012 by polling company Field  gives Senator Feinstein a commanding  26 percentage point lead over Republican challanger Elizabeth Emken  (Feinstein 57%, Emken 31%).

The California primary election was held on June 6, 2012 under the new rules where candidates from all the parties were on the same ballot. The top two candidates are to face off in the November 2012 general election. Under this system it is possible that two candidates from the same political party could end up battling in the general election.
That, however did not happen in California U.S. Senate primary. Incumbent Democratic U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein carried all of the California counties and received 49.5 percent of the vote. Her nearest rival Elizabeth Emken with solid backing from the Republican Party received 12.5 percent of the vote.
